According to a UNESCO ranking, Malaysia is known to be the 11th most desired study destination around the globe. About 100,000 international students come to Malaysia from over 100 countries for higher education. This country is known to be a universal educational hub for providing internationally renowned qualifications with the most affordable cost, modern facilities and amenities, excellent infrastructure and student friendly policies.


Hub to many international universities and affordability:


There are more than 700 private higher educational institutions in the country. In addition to this, many American and British Universities have also set up their campuses for the Malaysians as well as other international students who wish to pursue to study, can pursue it at a lower cost.


Hence, this country offers a wide range of study options for students to pursue their higher education from private educational institutes, public universities as well as foreign university branch campuses. All these courses and universities are authorized by the Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia. Similarly, all the courses that have been approved by the country’s Ministry of Higher Education also stand approved by any other country’s Ministry of Higher Education.


The Higher Education system of Malaysia is classified in two categories i.e. the public institution and the private institution.


Public Institutions


The public institutions in Malaysia, which comprise of public universities, colleges and polytechnics, are funded by the government of the country. There are about 20 public universities, 72 community colleges and 30 polytechnic institutions in the country. The study in Malaysia is the most affordable, for the international students who come into the country. As per the Ministry of Education in Malaysia approximately about 25000 students register in the public institutions.

In Malaysia, the public universities as well as colleges, have the best academic standards in the world. Private Institutions

There are about 53 private universities in the country and 6 foreign university branch campuses and 403 active private colleges. All the programs that are offered by the private higher education institutions in the country are subjected to certain accreditation requirements of the MQA i.e. Malaysian Qualification Agency. These private universities in the country, pass on quality education to its candidates with the best infrastructure that is available across the globe. The curriculum of these programs includes detailed study as well as practical training program which concentrate on research and innovative scientific developments.

The medium of instruction:

The English language is used as the major medium of instruction both at private and public higher educational institutions across all the courses.


The Higher Education System

In Malaysia, the higher education system is divided into the subsequent levels of qualifications:

  • Diploma
  • Undergraduate Degree
  • Post Graduate Diploma
  • Masters Degree and
  • Doctoral Degree





These diploma programs are administered by the private colleges and other foreign institutions in the country and are available in various fields of study. The duration of these diploma courses is about 1 to 2 years. The entry to the program is after the successful completion of the 12th grade.



This is an undergraduate course and the duration of this course in Malaysia is for 3 to 4 years. This degree is awarded to the students after the completion of the undergraduate courses like:

  • Bachelor of Arts (BA)
  • Bachelor of Science (BS) and
  • Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng)


The students are eligible for the Bachelor’s degree after the completion of their GCE A level, Polytechnic degree or their 12th Grade. There are some degree programs that are offered as Honours Degree (Hons), which usually requires a higher academic standard, as compared to just a pass and the duration for this kind of programme would be 4 years.



Masters Degree

This post graduate degree is a full time course with a duration of about 1 to 2 years. A student usually requires a bachelor’s degree or something equivalent to this, in order to pursue a master’s course.


Doctor of Philosophy Degree:

A student can take up a doctoral programme after he has completed his Bachelor’s as well as his Masters programme. A Ph.D. programme lasts for a period about 2 to 5 years. Bu this degree is only awarded after a minimum period of 2 years of research or a study in a specific area.


Language requirement:

The Malaysian Institutions do not generally require TOEFL, IELTS or any kind of language exam in order to enter their courses. But however, few of the public as well as all the foreign universities have set up certain language requirements for their various UG and PG degrees. Hence, students need to qualify language tests like TOEFL, IELTS, PTE or other such exams that have been advised by the university.
